How Long Does It Take to Learn Spanish? A Realistic Timeline

By the SpeakRoam editorial team · Updated October 2026

The honest answer is hours, not months. How fast you get there depends entirely on how many hours you put in each day.

The benchmark everyone cites

The U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI) ranks languages by difficulty for English speakers. Spanish sits in the easiest group, and FSI's rough estimate for reaching professional working proficiency is about 600 to 750 class hours. That is a demanding level, well beyond what a traveler needs. Treat it as the ceiling for this guide, not the goal.

What you actually need

  • Survival phrases (a few weeks): greetings, ordering, directions, numbers. Our 100-phrase guide covers this.
  • Basic travel conversations (roughly 100 to 200 hours, our estimate): you can handle hotels, restaurants and simple small talk, slowly.
  • Comfortable everyday conversation (several hundred hours): you follow most conversations at normal speed.
  • Professional proficiency (about 600 to 750 hours, per FSI): you can work in Spanish.

How long it takes at different daily practice

This table is simple arithmetic on those hour estimates. It is a planning aid, not a promise.

Read this before you planHours of effective practice count, not time sitting near an app. Speaking and listening practice moves you faster than passive reading. Prior exposure to a related language such as French, Italian or Portuguese also shortens the road.

How to hit a trip deadline

  1. Work backward from your departure date to find your weeks of prep.
  2. Pick a daily practice time you can keep, even on bad days. Consistency beats intensity.
  3. Prioritize speaking and listening: audio lessons, shadowing and repeating phrases out loud.
  4. Learn the phrases for your trip first (hotel, food, transport, emergencies), then widen out.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn Spanish for a trip?

For basic travel conversations, a rough estimate is on the order of 100 to 200 hours of focused practice, less if you only need survival phrases. At 30 minutes a day, 150 hours is about 10 months; at one hour a day, about 5 months.

Is Spanish easy for English speakers?

Relatively. The U.S. Foreign Service Institute groups Spanish among the languages that take English speakers the least time, estimating roughly 600 to 750 class hours to reach professional working proficiency.

Can I learn Spanish in 30 days?

You can learn a useful set of survival phrases in a few weeks, but conversational ability takes far longer. Be wary of any course that promises fluency in 30 days.
